INBIOWAL’s Patronage of the 5th NextGenBioCat Symposium
November 21, 2025, Milan, Italy
The INBIOWAL project was proud to patronise the 5th NextGenBioCat Symposium, a premier gathering of young researchers dedicated to advancing the field of biocatalysis.
The symposium was held on May 8th and 9th, 2025, in Milan, Italy, and was hosted by leading institutions such as TU Graz, ETH Zurich, TU Delft, University of Groningen, University of Milan, and Politecnico di Milano.
AbOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
Biocatalysis continues to be one of the most dynamic areas of research, with new discoveries reshaping the scientific landscape daily. The NextGenBioCat Symposium provided a platform for PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career principal investigators to showcase their groundbreaking work and foster collaborations in topics such as:
- Applied biocatalysis for industrial applications.
- Elucidation of enzymatic mechanisms to better understand protein functions.
- Protein, reaction, and metabolic engineering, including computational tools for design.
- Light-promoted enzymatic processes, exploring new frontiers in photobiocatalysis.
- Ultra-high-throughput screening methods for enzyme discovery and optimization.
- Design of novel multi-enzyme cascade reactions, pushing the boundaries of biotechnological innovation.
A Unique Satellite Event
On the afternoon of May 9th, a special satellite event hosted by the MSCA network BiocatCodeEXPANDER explored cutting-edge advancements in biocatalysis, particularly the integration of non-canonical amino acids into proteins. This session highlighted emerging opportunities to revolutionise enzyme functionality and expand biotechnology’s practical applications.
Opportunities for Participants
The symposium encouraged networking and knowledge exchange among early-career scientists. Participants had the opportunity to:
- Present their research among peers and mentors.
- Discuss ideas and challenges in biocatalysis.
- Forge collaborations with researchers across diverse disciplines.
- Gain career insights and develop new opportunities.
As part of the INBIOWAL project’s participation in the symposium, several researchers presented their scientific results, showcasing the project’s contribution to advancing sustainable biocatalysis.
The INBIOWAL representatives included Oliwia Pomarańska, Anna Dunal, Filip Boratyński, Abirami Baskaram, Fabio Parmeggiani, and Stefano Serra, who shared their research on enzyme catalysis in unconventional media, biomass valorisation, and chemo-enzymatic synthesis of fine chemicals.
