Enzyme Use in Unconventional Media for Biomass Valorization and Fragrance Synthesis
Milano, May 5-7, 2025
Workshop Overview
An intensive three-day workshop in Milan, hosted by Politecnico di Milano and SCITEC-CNR, will focus on the revolutionary use of enzymes in unconventional media for biomass valorization and fragrance synthesis. These workshops are an essential part of the INBIOWAL project’s efforts to advance sustainable and eco-friendly biotechnological processes.
Participants will explore innovative chemoenzymatic techniques that use natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) and ionic liquids as reaction media. These unconventional solvents offer greener and more efficient alternatives to traditional chemical methods, enhancing the yield and sustainability of enzymatic reactions. The workshops are designed to provide practical and theoretical insights into real-world challenges in biomass valorization.
WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHTS
• Chemoenzymatic Processing of Biomass:
Techniques for processing complex biomass, particularly from the agri-food and oil industries, will be explored. Enzymes will be shown to catalyze reactions selectively, transforming waste materials into valuable bioactive compounds.
• Enzymes in Unconventional Media:
Insights will be provided into how enzymes like lipases operate efficiently in NADES and ionic liquids. These media not only improve reaction yields but also offer significant environmental advantages by replacing toxic solvents used in conventional processes.
• Fragrance Synthesis via Biocatalysis:
Sessions will cover how natural by-products can be converted into fragrance compounds using enzymatic pathways. The synthesis of aroma molecules for use in the cosmetics and perfume industries will be highlighted, emphasizing the precision and sustainability of these biocatalytic methods.
