Ancestral Sequence Reconstruction Workshop, December 2025

As part of the INBIOWAL project’s scientific training programme, participants joined a two-day online workshop on Ancestral Sequence Reconstruction (ASR), led by Professor Elizabeth Gillam from UQ. The workshop introduced the fundamental principles of ASR and its relevance in molecular evolution, highlighting the method’s advantages compared to traditional directed mutagenesis. Through practical demonstrations of the full ASR analysis pipeline — from sequence collection and alignment to phylogenetic tree construction and result interpretation — participants gained hands-on insight into how ASR can be applied in protein engineering and ancestral function revival. The event provided an important opportunity to expand methodological expertise and support the development of innovative research within the INBIOWAL project.

INBIOWAL Patronates the 5th NextGenBiocat Symposium

The 5th NextGenBiocat Symposium, patronated by the INBIOWAL project, will bring together young scientists, PhD candidates, and early-career researchers to discuss the latest advancements in biocatalysis. The event will feature presentations on applied biocatalysis, enzymatic mechanisms, protein and metabolic engineering, and light-promoted enzymatic processes. Attendees will also explore high-throughput screening methods and multi-enzyme cascade reactions. This symposium aims to foster collaboration and inspire innovation in sustainable enzyme technology.

Workshops on Conducting Bioprocesses in Membrane Bioreactors, Along with a Demonstration of the Installation of Such a Device on a Pilot Scale - September 9-10, 2025

During this two-day workshop, participants explored the practical and theoretical aspects of conducting bioprocesses in membrane bioreactors. The programme included lectures on sustainable bioprocess design, operational parameters, and system integration, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the technology. A key highlight of the event was a live demonstration of the installation and operation of a membrane bioreactor on a pilot scale, showcasing its potential for sustainable production. The workshop offered valuable hands-on experience and encouraged interdisciplinary discussions among INBIOWAL partners.
Participants also examined applications of membrane bioreactor technology in the context of the circular bioeconomy and industrial waste valorisation, reinforcing the importance of biotechnological innovation in sustainable development.
Workshops on Enzyme Use in Unconventional Media for Biomass Valorization and Fragrance Synthesis - May 5-7, 2025

Location: Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche – Istituto di Scienze e Tecnologie Chimiche “Giulio Natta” (SCITEC-CNR), Milan, Italy
POLIMI and SCITEC-CNR hosted workshops focused on using enzymes in unconventional media, such as NADES and ionic liquids, for chemoenzymatic biomass valorisation and the synthesis of fragrance compounds. Participants took part in both hands-on laboratory sessions and theoretical lectures, exploring how enzymes such as lipases and hydrolases can catalyse reactions in a more sustainable way. The event highlighted advanced biocatalytic processes leading to the creation of valuable products for industries including cosmetics, food, and pharmaceuticals, demonstrating the potential of green chemistry to transform industrial production practices.
Workshop on Rational Design of NADES for Natural Compound Extraction - February 19-21, 2025

During this three-day workshop, researchers explored the innovative use of Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) for extracting valuable bioactive compounds from natural sources. The event included lectures on the environmental and economic benefits of NADES, hands-on lab sessions, and a research webinar on effective grant writing. Key project management topics were also discussed. Participants gained practical experience in designing and optimizing NADES for real-world applications.
INBIOWAL Kick-off Meeting – September 25-27, 2024

The INBIOWAL project officially launched with a three-day Kick-off Meeting held at UPWr. During the meeting, project partners from six international institutions gathered to discuss the strategic direction of the project, review work packages, and establish the collaborative framework for future activities. This meeting marked the beginning of an exciting international research effort focused on green technologies for waste valorization. The event included presentations from all partners and outlined the milestones for the first year of the project.

Research Webinar: Effective Writing of Grant Applications

As part of the stationary research workshop on NADES at the University of Zagreb, participants attended the “Effective Writing of Grant Applications” webinar, led by Mohammad Taherzadeh from SCRR. The session offered comprehensive guidance on structuring successful grant proposals, addressing key evaluation criteria, and clearly formulating research objectives. Participants learned practical strategies for improving the clarity and impact of their project ideas, as well as tips for aligning proposals with funding priorities. The webinar served as an important opportunity to strengthen the participants’ skills in scientific communication and project planning, enhancing their ability to secure competitive research funding in the future.
