INBIOWAL Scientific Hackathon
MAY, 2025
Overview
The INBIOWAL project will launch with an exhilarating Scientific Hackathon, designed to inspire young scientists, PhD candidates, MSc, and BSc students. This event will be held at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (UPWr) and will focus on developing innovative solutions for waste valorization, turning industrial by-products into valuable resources. The hackathon aligns with INBIOWAL’s overarching mission to advance sustainable biotechnological processes and promote eco-friendly solutions with real economic impact.

Event OBJECTIVES
The hackathon is set to create a vibrant platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and hands-on scientific problem-solving. Key objectives include:
- Engaging Early-Career Researchers. The event will actively involve young scientists in applying scientific theories to practical challenges. Participants will have the chance to address real-world issues related to waste and by-product management, using concepts from fields like green chemistry, biotechnology, and molecular engineering.
- Promoting Interdisciplinary Collaboration. Teams will be composed of individuals from diverse scientific backgrounds, encouraging cross-disciplinary thinking. This setup fosters innovative approaches to complex problems and mirrors the collaborative ethos of the INBIOWAL project, which unites partners across Europe to leverage varied expertise.
- Fostering Innovation for Environmental and Economic Impact. Participants will brainstorm and develop solutions that not only minimize environmental impact but also offer economic benefits. The focus will be on transforming waste streams from industries such as agriculture and oil processing into high-value compounds, with potential applications in sectors like food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.
Event Structure
The hackathon will include a variety of activities designed to maximize engagement and learning:
- Workshops and Seminars. Participants will attend expert-led workshops that cover the latest advancements in waste valorization and sustainable biotechnological practices. These sessions will provide the foundational knowledge needed to drive effective ideation and problem-solving.
- Mentorship and Guidance. Experienced researchers and faculty members from UPWr and other INBIOWAL partner institutions will mentor participants throughout the event. These mentors will guide teams through the brainstorming and development process, offering expert advice and feedback on the feasibility and impact of their proposed solutions.
- Final Competition and Awards. Teams will present their solutions to a panel of judges, comprising project partners and industry experts. The most innovative and impactful ideas will receive recognition and the opportunity for further development within the INBIOWAL framework.
SKILLS AND BENEFITS
Participation in the hackathon will provide young scientists with:
• Hands-on Experience: Practical application of scientific and engineering concepts in a competitive, real-world setting.
• Enhanced Soft Skills: Opportunities to improve teamwork, communication, and project management abilities.
• Networking Opportunities: A chance to connect with peers, mentors, and industry professionals, laying the groundwork for future collaborations.
• Exposure to Cutting-Edge Research: Access to the latest research methodologies and technologies used in waste valorization, such as biocatalysis and the use of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES).
The INBIOWAL Scientific Hackathon represents a critical first step in engaging the next generation of scientists and innovators in the mission to revolutionize waste management through sustainable, high-impact research and technology development.
